Christoph Haffter studied philosophy and musicology in Basel, Paris (VIII), Berlin (Humboldt) and New York (Columbia). He is Phd student at the University of Basel (with Prof. Gunnar Hindrichs and Prof. Matthias Schmidt) and works as assistant at the chair for Aesthetics and Philosophy of Art at the University of Fribourg (Prof. Emmanuel Alloa). He was editor of the journal for contemporary music “dissonance” and works as music critic. His PhD project “Musical Materialism” is a philosophical investigation of the conditions of contemporary music. He proposes an aesthetics of music in the spirit of Adorno’s critical materialism. The project combines a systematic inquiry into controversial concepts of contemporary artistic production with a new interpretation of some fundamental texts of the history of aesthetics from German Idealism, Romanticism and Critical Theory.
