Yixuan Liu is a joint PhD student (cotutelle) at the University of Fribourg and Leiden University, supervised by Emmanuel Alloa and Frank Chouraqui. Her doctoral research project, titled The Temporality of Images: ‘Merleau-Ponty’s Visual Ontology and its Resonances with Chinese Landscape Painting, delves into ontological questions through the lens of images.’ Drawing on phenomenology, iconology, art history, and comparative philosophy, her work aims to challenge traditional views that regard images as secondary or static. Instead, she explores their dynamic temporality, particularly through Merleau-Ponty’s concept of ‘reversibility’. Her recent research interests focus on the spatiotemporal constancy in Chinese landscape painting and the philosophical history of time.
