In novels, short stories, and autobiographical texts, readers repeatedly find characters stumbling through disconcerting autopsy rooms and mysterious laboratories, hospital trains, operating theatres, and radiation rooms. During the same period, the medical system evolved rapidly, bringing about novel, highly specialized spaces: from pathological institutes and X-ray-laboratories, to large clinical centers and intensive care wards. This four-year project explores these connections between literature, medicine, and wider culture, thereby deepening our understanding of the role of literature in the still ongoing process of medicalization.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=“1_2″ _builder_version=“4.21.0″ _module_preset=“default“ global_colors_info=“{}“][et_pb_image src=“https://projects.unifr.ch/medikale-raeume/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Britischer-Lazarettzug_Frankreich_1918.jpg“ title_text=“Britischer Lazarettzug_Frankreich_1918″ _builder_version=“4.21.0″ _module_preset=“default“ custom_margin=“||15px||false|false“ animation_style=“slide“ animation_direction=“right“ animation_duration=“500ms“ animation_intensity_slide=“2%“ sticky_limit_bottom=“row“ border_radii=“off|30px||30px|“ global_colors_info=“{}“][/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=“4.21.0″ _module_preset=“default“ text_font=“Poppins|300|||||||“ text_line_height=“1.6em“ text_orientation=“justified“ global_colors_info=“{}“]

British Hospital Train France 1918

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure=“1_2,1_2″ _builder_version=“4.21.0″ _module_preset=“default“ width_tablet=““ width_phone=“90%“ width_last_edited=“on|phone“ custom_padding=“100px|||||“ global_colors_info=“{}“][et_pb_column type=“1_2″ _builder_version=“4.21.0″ _module_preset=“default“ global_colors_info=“{}“][et_pb_image src=“https://projects.unifr.ch/medikale-raeume/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/Neurochirurgischer-OP_Quelle-Goetz-Schlese.bmp“ title_text=“Neurochirurgischer OP_Quelle Götz Schlese“ _builder_version=“4.21.0″ _module_preset=“default“ custom_margin=“||15px||false|false“ animation_style=“slide“ animation_direction=“left“ animation_duration=“500ms“ animation_intensity_slide=“2%“ border_radii=“off|30px||30px|“ global_colors_info=“{}“][/et_pb_image][et_pb_text _builder_version=“4.21.0″ _module_preset=“default“ text_font=“Poppins|300|||||||“ text_line_height=“1.6em“ text_orientation=“justified“ global_colors_info=“{}“]

Neurosurgical operation theatre (Götz Schlese)

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=“1_2″ _builder_version=“4.21.0″ _module_preset=“default“ global_colors_info=“{}“][et_pb_text _builder_version=“4.21.0″ _module_preset=“default“ text_font=“Poppins||||||||“ text_font_size=“17px“ text_line_height=“1.6em“ text_orientation=“justified“ global_colors_info=“{}“]

With a public lecture series on the topic of ‘hospitals’; speakers are eminent writers, medical historians, ethicists, and hospital architects.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

Medical Spaces in Literary Prose of the Long 20th CenturyMedical settings are a prominent motif in 20th-century literature.
