Ob als Schauplatz sozialmedizinischen Fortschritts, ideologischer Heilung oder des Kalten Krieges einerseits oder als Ort kritischer Vergangenheitsbewältigung und individuellen und kollektiven Verfalls andererseits – der medikale Raum in der Erzählliteratur der DDR besitzt neben seiner konkreten Funktion in einer fiktiven Geschichte immer auch eine repräsentative Bedeutung für die reale Gesellschaft. In literaturgeschichtlicher Perspektive lässt sich daran ein Funktionswandel ablesen, der mit der sich ändernden Haltung der Autorinnen und Autoren zur DDR einhergeht.
