Project Summary

Enlightenment in the face of anti-Judaism and homophobia is not only one of the core concerns of contemporary theology and humanities, but also of democratic governments in open societies. This project aims to contribute to this by providing easily accessible, contextualised interpretations of the Sunday readings from the First Testament, as stipulated by the Roman Catholic lectionary. The use of the First Testament instead of the Old Testament is based on the Roman Catholic Church's official renunciation of an essentially anti-Judaic theology. The textual interpretations takes into account the tension between the BIBLE (text), the CHURCH (community) and the WORLD (society), in which pastors, preachers and the faithful in general find themselves. As part of the contextualisation of the text historical images of places and landscapes of Bible lands will be made newly accessible, which have documentary value in view of demographic changes, wars and earthquakes in the Middle East. The project can draw on relevant resources at the Department of Biblical Studies of the University of Fribourg, in particular iconographic, anthropological, feminist and postcolonial exegesis expertise. Workshops in the middle of the project will enable face-to-face encounters between scholars and pastors, the results of which will feed back into the interpretation process.
